The Drama Addict’s Guide to Surviving the End of One’s Favorite Drama

As Heartstrings has come to an end and we are scraping to pick ourselves up and deal with the reality of the situation, one always has to have a back-up plan. Here’s a little guide I put together to make the transition easier:

We’ll Always Have Paris. In this case Paris being the music. And the music being the Heartstrings OST.

Feature film – it. Starting a new drama right away may feel a little tedious, since it takes a while to get invested, and you need your fix now. Try something like Cyrano Agency or the Japanese film Linda, Linda, Linda. They’re bound to turn your frown upside down.

Run in the opposite direction to find your way back home. Try something non-Korean, such as the awesome little French film Love Me If You Dare. It’s a story about being in love with your best friend and everything that means to the two characters, from childhood, to their teens and into their adulthood. The two stars were the first on-screen couple I shipped in real life and my wish came true. Marion Cotillard and Guillaume Canet became a real couple, two years or so after the film(and are still going strong, having welcomed their first child this year). She also went on to win an Oscar for her portrayal of Edith Piaf and he went on to successfully direct and star in other projects, but no matter how many times I’ve seen them in other films, I could never forget this first instant of absolute magic. The chemistry between the leads is so intense you might need protection goggles during the kiss scenes. The whole film is such a passionate, beautiful, warm, joyful, insanely mischievous(some might even call it perverted, though not in the sexual sense) ride, and the playful tone hides so many layers of metaphors, that it will make you fall in love irrevocably. Or you might hate it, there’s always that possibility, but hey, you won’t know until you try. The “Better than…” scene (you’ll know what I mean when and if you watch the film) is one of my favorite scenes ever.

Start an online petition asking MBC to release the bears. Make sure to mention that it’s not a PETA-related action, and that in fact you are referring to the releasing of the bear key chains shown in the drama Heartstrings. Might want to wait a day or two before making that clarification though, just in case the controversy and ensuing buzz will make MBC release them sooner.

Learn to play the gayageum. Sure, it may not be easy, but it’s the most surefire way of securing a Shin of your own.

Fangirl to your heart’s content.

Whether it’s this

this,

or this:

Something will surely distract you from the pain in yer heart.

Find a rebound. Admit it, we all need it sometimes. Flirting with a drama that makes you feel good about yourself with no intention of settling down is good for the soul. Got some guilty pleasure dramas stashed away? Now’s the time to dig in.

Spend some time with a friend. Sure, you may no longer share the sizzling passion of yore, but we all have a drama or two we can always go back to for comfort. Goong or Coffee Prince might be a good (and tonally similar) option, as would be a part of the Hong Sisters oeuvre (I’d avoid YAB though because it’ll make you even more melancholic – Delightful Girl Choon Hyang is the one I’d go with right now).

Date other dramas. It will be awkward at first and you might be in for some excruciating hours and annoying dialogue, but the best way to get back in the game is to… get back in the game. Besides, you never know who your next true love might be

Fall in love again. Whether it’s going to be Scent of a Woman, Protect the Boss, Birdie Buddy, Can’t Lose or another one of the currently airing/soon-to-be-airing dramas, one is sure to meet some of your expectations. It may not be the same as what you are currently missing, but who’s to say different is bad? My best bet? The Musical, the Gu Hye Sun drama that is finally set to air. A med student that wants to be a musical actress and a song writer with connections to Broadway? Did they have Heartstrings fans in mind when they finally decided to air it? Sign me right up! I think I found my next recapping project. Well, at least one of them anyway.

*Disclaimer: The above guide is intended for humorous purposes. No dramas were harmed during its production.

I caught a highlight reel of Heartstrings’ first episodes on MBC America, making me wonder if they’re going to show it.

LOL. Great guide, and I must agree about Love Me If You Dare, it’s one of my favourite films. I think I’m going to move to US/UK tv for now to nurse my heartbreak, for plotlines that never end…

Yay, someone else who loves Love Me If You Dare! It’s just such an amazing film 😀 I never get tired of it or of rewatching it, in fact it gets better with multiple viewings 😀

What UK/US tv shows are you turning to?

woke up this morning and turned to your blog. sure glad i did. sure glad i did. while my withdrawal symptoms have not been too painful, there is a gaping hole coz i will really miss heartstrings. i wanted to see what is next for our main couple. i thought i saw cha boo won with a guy’s arm around her in that last scene in catharsis while kyo won was singing…. i’m dying of curiosity who that guy is? i wanted to see how sarang and hee jie act as gf’s to their partners. and ki young…. what’s going on with you now. they didn’t even expound on what happened with him and HJ… there was some history there. hayyyy..

but i have kinda began my process… .i marathoned-watched protect the boss — before i realized there was only 6 episodes out… i thought it had more than that. was interesting but i don’t feel for the OTP. i’m trying, i’m trying….

but i like the movies you recommended, silver. i will certainly check ’em out. specially with the background story of the french film…. sparked my interest.

i know i can survive this… with your help and guidance.

I hope you will enjoy watching my recommendations 😀 I can only say that I loved Linda, Linda, Linda and Love Me If You Dare with all my heart and that I really liked Cyrano despite some of its flaws 😀

    ha ha ha
THanks for this. I have been crafting a funny yet insightful and comment to your Ep15 recap but so far, it hasn’t beamed out of my graying grey matters. I think more snap caps of our pretty boy won’t do any harm. hint… hint…

    • silverlux August 27, 2011 at 1:28 pm

I’ve actually been considering going back and doing recaps of episodes 1-6 because I had only started recapping at episode 7, but I don’t know when I will have the time. However, it is on my list of things I want to do so I might get to it eventually 😀

I just saw you are also thinking on recapping the musical as well. lol
That’s the next drama I have in mind 🙂

    • silverlux August 27, 2011 at 1:17 pm

Yes, when I heard The Musical was being aired, it was like one of my dream dramas was finally seeing the light of day. I mean, I LOVE musicals and I LOVE musical dramas(my favorites by far). Plus, if I’m not mistaken, the heroine pretends to be a boy at one point? *drool*

I’m not crazy about the cast – admittedly I’ve only seen Gu Hye Sun in BBF and I didn’t marvel at her acting skills back then(I am of the team that thought Lee Min Jung totally stole that show), but I do remember her singing and being able to carry a tune so I’m guessing she will do this part justice. Daniel Choi I like but can’t say I get uber fangirlish about him, I mean, if I were to choose 20 Korean actors I like more than him, I would have no trouble doing so. But I’ve seen stills from the production and I think he fits the part of the brilliant composer very well, he totally has the geeky yet hot look so… yay 😀

    Dear Silverlux,
It was a pleasure reading your Guide to Surviving the end of ones favorite drama. I followed Heartstrings from the beginning to the end and experienced the many excitement and few disappointments the show brought me. I don’t know what, but for some reason HS became close to my heart together with the stars of the drama who shared my mornings with me twice a week. I am too old to be a fan but now I find myself searching for news about YH and SH maybe because now I appreciate them more. I read somewhere that these two encountered problems during the shoot because their management were weak and poor so they weren’t able to protect them at times which made me so sad because they work so hard and accepted whatever came their way to make the show work but what made me happy where comments made by the staffs and crews on how YH and SH made the filming environment a happy place everyday despite…… I find myself wondering what to watch next so thank you for the possible replacement . Will make sure to visit you again and hope that all of us here support these two wonderful actors who somehow became part of us. I hope Shin Hyes popularity will soar high together with the success of Yong Hwa and CNBlue.

YFFM is a special drama and a hard one to replace, and most of that can be credited to the cast. Yonghwa and ShinHye are both such beautiful and beautifully talented people that they would shine anywhere so it’s no surprise, but the rest of the cast as well, they did amazing jobs, working under what I can only imagine was some intense pressure from the network, the public and just about any direction possible. But I’m sure their hard work won’t go unnoticed and I bet they will all have amazing careers in the future 😀

My husband abandoned me and the kids for 8 months, and refused to come back because he got hold up by a woman whom he just met, myself and the kids has been suffering and it has been heel of a struggle, but I decide to do all means to make sure that my family come together as one again. I went online there I saw so many good talk about this spell caster whose email is abuyespelltemple@gmail.com so I had to contact him and explain my problem to him and in just 2 days as he has promised, my husband came home and his behavior was back to the man i got married to.
